Report: Cubs to interview Jim Hickey for pitching coach position
A reunion between Joe Maddon and a former coaching pal of his may be in store for the Chicago Cubs next season.
After the Cubs relieved Chris Bosio of his duties as pitching coach on Saturday, sources confirmed to 670 The Score that former Tampa Bay Rays pitching coach Jim Hickey will interview for the same position.
Maddon expressed an interest in having all of his coaching staff from this season return next year, but a reunion with Hickey presumably wouldn't be an issue.
Hickey left the Rays at the end of the 2017 season after spending 11 years with the organization and was the pitching coach when Maddon was manager of the club.
The 56-year-old had already spoken with the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals about their vacant pitching coach positions, according to sources.
Maddon spoke with Hickey earlier this month before Bosio was fired, but there was no inclination Hickey would take the position in Chicago.
"I have talked to Hick, (but) purely how he's doing," Maddon explained to the Chicago Tribune's Mark Gonzales. "It surprised me and a lot of us," added the coach, on Hickey leaving the Rays.
