Report: Rangers have interest in Alex Cobb

Steve Mitchell / USA TODAY Sports

The Texas Rangers don't appear to be messing around now that a pitcher they've apparently coveted for a long time is available.

Sources told Jon Morosi of MLB.com that the Rangers have interest in free-agent starter Alex Cobb, and have already had "preliminary contact" with the 30-year-old's agents.

Cobb has apparently been on the Rangers' radar for quite some time. Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported earlier this month that the Rangers tried to trade for the right-hander last offseason while he was still a member of the Tampa Bay Rays.

Signing Cobb, one of the top starters available in a relatively thin free-agent class, would cost Texas draft-pick compensation, as he rejected the Rays' qualifying offer last week.

Cobb made 29 starts for the Rays in 2017 - his first full season since undergoing Tommy John surgery two years ago - and posted a 3.66 ERA, 1.221 WHIP, and 128 strikeouts across 179 1/3 innings.

The Baltimore Orioles have also been reported as having interest in Cobb.
