Yankees option Andujar to Triple-A

Miguel Andujar won't break camp with the New York Yankees despite his eye-opening performance this spring, as the precocious third baseman was optioned to Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes/Barre on Sunday, the team announced.

Widely considered the Yankees' second-best prospect, Andujar arrived at spring training set to compete for the everyday job at third base following a monster 2017 campaign split between Double-A and Triple-A, and the 23-year-old enjoyed a torrid start to the exhibition season, smacking four home runs while going 8-for-19 (.421) over his first seven Grapefruit League games.

The Yankees' recent additions of Brandon Drury and Neil Walker, however, all but assured that Andujar wouldn't make the club out of spring training, and his performance dipped following his hot start, too, as he went just 3-for-23 (.130) with no homers and six strikeouts over his last seven spring contests.

Still, Andujar - who made his MLB debut last year, getting called up for one game in June before rejoining the club as a late-September call-up - definitely made an impression in camp, not only with his bat but with his glove, according to manager Aaron Boone.

"I came in expecting a lot, frankly, and I'm excited with what I've seen," Boone told MLB.com's Bryan Hoch last month. "I've seen what I feel like is progress on the defensive side. I feel like he's going to be a really good player in this league."
