Didi Gregorius' mad dash home on Saturday sent the New York Yankees to the playoffs, but there's a chance he may not make it to October.

Following the Yankees' 6-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday, manager Aaron Boone announced that there's a chance Gregorius' 2018 season may be finished after he tore cartilage in his right wrist on his slide, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.

The shortstop, who did not play on Sunday, has since received a cortisone injection in his wrist and also underwent an MRI exam.

"Unsure," Boone said when asked if he's optimistic that Gregorius will play again this season, according to YES Network. "I think there's a real possibility we do (get him back). There's also a possibility that we don't. We'll know a lot more in a few days and see how the wrist responds to the cortisone shot."

For his part, Gregorius told Hoch that he has a high level of optimism that he'll return this season.

"I would not want to sit out and watch that (wild-card game)," he said.

Gregorius added that the injury occurred when his wrist got caught under his body during the headfirst slide into home.

The 28-year-old is in the midst of a career season at the plate, sporting a .268/.336/.498 slash line (120 OPS+) with 27 homers, 86 RBIs, and 10 stolen bases.

If Gregorius is out long term, the Yankees could turn to defensive wizard Adeiny Hechavarria to play shortstop the rest of the way. Alternatively, they could shift rookie infielder Gleyber Torres from second base to shortstop and use Neil Walker at the keystone.
