The New York Yankees may not be staring at an extended absence for shortstop Didi Gregorius after all.

A day after it appeared Gregorius was in danger of missing the rest of the season, and possibly longer, due to torn ligaments in his wrist, the infielder said he's encouraged by how much better it feels. He added that he believes he'll be able to play again this season, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said the team will know more in a couple days.

"He felt significantly better obviously with some of the range of motion things he's able to do," Boone said. "I would also temper it. The true indicator will come Wednesday when he's re-evaluated and we see how he does."

The 28-year-old sustained the injury during Saturday's playoff-clincher on a slide at home plate. He received a cortisone injection and underwent an MRI on Sunday.

Gregorius joined teammates for on-field workouts Monday afternoon with his wrist heavily wrapped.

Through 132 games, Gregorius is batting .268/.336/.498 with a career-high 27 home runs.
