D-Backs re-sign Escobar to 3-year, $21M deal

Eduardo Escobar isn't hitting the open market after all.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed to terms with the versatile infielder on a three-year contract worth a reported $21 million, according to Nick Piecoro of AZ Central.

Acquired at the trade deadline from the Minnesota Twins, Escobar had the best overall campaign of his career. Between the two clubs, he hit .272/.334/.489 with 23 home runs in 151 games while playing third base and shortstop, though he exclusively played the hot corner after the trade.

He was also a doubles machine, particularly in the first half of the season. He tallied 48 two-baggers, trailing only Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman (51) for the major-league lead.

The 29-year-old was slated to hit free agency this fall, but the Diamondbacks saw to it that he would stay put. With third baseman Jake Lamb still on the roster, Escobar could slide over to be the team's primary shortstop in 2019.
