The Milwaukee Brewers are reportedly showing interest in veteran free-agent second baseman Jed Lowrie, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Second base was a black hole for Milwaukee during much of last season. Jonathan Schoop, who was acquired at the trade deadline, proved ineffective and forced the team to improvise and use corner infielder Travis Shaw, among others, out of position at the keystone with regularity. Schoop was non-tendered in November and Shaw's likely to return to third base in 2019, so the team's regular second-base job is once again vacant.

Lowrie, who spent the last three seasons with the Oakland Athletics, earned his first All-Star berth in 2018 by hitting .267/.353/.448 with 23 homers and 99 RBIs over 157 games to help the surprising A's reach the playoffs. Though he mostly played second base last year, the 34-year-old also has plenty of experience at shortstop and third base, versatility that could appeal to Brewers manager Craig Counsell.

The Brewers appear likely to go for a veteran short-term option at the keystone in order to avoid blocking second-base prospect Keston Hiura long term. The Brewers' top prospect according to MLB Pipeline, Hiura is poised to arrive in the majors as soon as next year.

Lowrie is not the only veteran second baseman that's caught the Brewers' eye, as they're reportedly also interested in free agent Daniel Murphy.
