Report: Mets have discussed Moustakas

The New York Mets have discussed free-agent third baseman Mike Moustakas, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post.

The Mets have been one of the busiest teams this offseason, signing catcher Wilson Ramos and trading for second baseman Robinson Cano and closer Edwin Diaz. Moustakas may still be on the table as an upgrade at the hot corner.

Incumbent third baseman Todd Frazier has one year remaining on a two-year contract and slashed .213/.303/.390 with 18 home runs in 115 games for the Mets last season. Moustakas was more productive, boasting a .251/.315/.459 slash line with 28 home runs and 95 RBIs in 152 games between the Kansas City Royals and Milwaukee Brewers.

The addition of Moustakas would tip the scales toward a left-handed Mets lineup. Cano, Brandon Nimmo, Michael Conforto, and Jeff McNeil all hit left and are poised to get the bulk of playing time at their positions. But the right-hitting Frazier could shift to first base, splitting time with McNeil in a possible platoon situation.

Last season, Moustakas wound up signing a one-year, $5.5-million contract with the Royals after he rejected a qualifying offer from the club. With no qualifying offer issued this year, signing him will not cost his new team a compensatory draft pick.
