With their 32nd-round selection (957th overall) in the 2019 MLB draft, the Toronto Blue Jays selected Braden Halladay, a pitcher from Calvary Christian High School in Clearwater, Fla.

Braden, who was born in Toronto and remains a dual citizen, is the son of Blue Jays icon and Hall of Fame pitcher Roy Halladay, who died in a 2017 plane crash. The Blue Jays have retired Roy's No. 32.

Braden is committed to pitching at Penn State University, and Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins confirmed this selection was ceremonial, and a way to honor the young hurler's father and the Halladay family.

"He's headed to Penn State, but we're glad to have drafted him," Atkins said, according to Sportsnet's Hazel Mae.

"It was really a group thing, something we had talked about doing to really just signal to them and acknowledge them as part of the Blue Jay family and specifically Braden," Blue Jays director of amateur scouting Steve Sanders said, according to The Canadian Press.

Braden's Canadian citizenship has enabled him to represent the country with the Canadian national junior team. In 2018, shortly after his father's death, he pitched a perfect inning for Team Canada in a spring-training game against the Blue Jays.
