Orioles sign 1st overall pick Rutschman to reported record $8.1M deal
The Baltimore Orioles signed catcher Adley Rutschman, the first overall pick in the 2019 MLB draft, on Monday.
The Oregon State product will get $8.1 million, a new bonus record that eclipses the $8 million Gerrit Cole received in 2011, Jim Callis of MLB.com reports. However, the slotted value for this year's No. 1 pick was for more than $8.4 million.
Orioles general manager Mike Elias and Rutschman will hold a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, and then the top pick will be introduced to fans during Baltimore's game against the San Diego Padres, according to Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com.
Rutschman has won several awards, including the Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy.
The 21-year-old led the Beavers to a College World Series title in 2018 and to the NCAA regionals this year.
