Report: Crick-Vazquez altercation began over locker room music

A heated clubhouse altercation between Pittsburgh Pirates pitchers Kyle Crick and Felipe Vazquez started because of locker room music, sources told Nubyjas Wilborn of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Before Monday's game against the San Francisco Giants, Vazquez apparently approached Crick in the visitors' clubhouse at Oracle Park and asked him to turn off the music playing at his locker. When Crick refused and turned away from his teammate, Vazquez reportedly threw a punch and followed it with a secondary blow before a scuffle ensued.

"We both ended up getting fined. I'm filing a grievance," Crick told Wilborn. "I don't think it was just. I was defending myself. If we were on the street, this would've been assault. I got swung at twice before I swung back."

Vazquez required six stitches to his nose after the fight, while Crick had a callus ripped off his foot and also needed season-ending surgery to repair a damaged right index finger.

The team fined Crick $2,500 for his involvement in the incident and Vazquez received a heftier fine of $10,000, a team source told Wilborn.

Tensions between the two players had apparently been building for months, and Crick was reportedly involved in a July confrontation with bullpen coach Euclides Rojas because of an issue with Vazquez.

Crick reportedly complained to Rojas that Vazquez was receiving preferential treatment when Vazquez wasn't on the field with the rest of Pittsburgh's pitchers during warmups. After Rojas told Crick to mind his own business, the confrontation escalated and eventually led to a two-game suspension for the coach.
