The Boston Red Sox have reportedly finalized their move to hire Chaim Bloom as the club's new head of baseball operations, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

While the job title isn't yet certain, a source told Mark Feinsand of MLB.com that Bloom will become the team's chief baseball officer. Assistant general manager Brian O'Halloran will assume the GM role under Bloom, according to Feinsand.

Bloom had been serving as the vice president of baseball operations for the Tampa Bay Rays since the end of the 2014 season, when Andrew Friedman departed to take a promotion with the Los Angeles Dodgers as their president of baseball operations.

Bloom is a Yale graduate and was a finalist for the New York Mets' GM vacancy last winter before they hired Brodie Van Wagenen. He was the only external candidate the Red Sox chose to interview, according to Feinsand.

Under Bloom's watch, the Rays posted a 414-396 record over five seasons while making the playoffs once. This past offseason, they signed Charlie Morton to the largest free-agent contract in their franchise's history, agreeing to terms with the right-hander on a two-year, $30-million contract.

The Red Sox have officially been without a GM since Mike Hazen was hired away by the Arizona Diamondbacks as their executive vice president. Until recently, Boston's president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski had served a dual role, but he was fired in early September mere months after helping the club win the World Series.

Bloom comes with rave reviews from around the league and from former colleagues, with one anonymous coworker saying, "For a guy as smart and accomplished as he is, I think he gives everyone a feeling that he's approachable and wants to engage," according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.
