Report: Grandal to become free agent after declining Brewers option

Yasmani Grandal will decline his $16-million mutual option for 2020 with the Milwaukee Brewers and become a free agent, reports MLB Network's Jon Heyman.

The 30-year-old Cuban catcher cannot receive a qualifying offer and is expected to get a "huge deal," according to Heyman.

Grandal appeared in 153 games for the Brewers while playing on a one-year deal after reportedly turning down a multi-year offer from the New York Mets.

The veteran backstop hit .246/.380/.468 with 28 home runs and 77 RBIs. He was worth 5.2 WAR, according to FanGraphs.

Grandal was also the best pitch framer in MLB among qualified catchers, posting 17.0 catcher framing runs above average, and was second behind J.T. Realmuto in FanGraphs' defense.
