Braves' Hamels injures pitching shoulder during workout
Atlanta Braves left-hander Cole Hamels is dealing with left shoulder discomfort after doing weighted-ball exercises and won't report to spring training on time, manager Brian Snitker said on Wednesday, according to The Athletic's David O'Brien.
The veteran southpaw is in Dallas and will be re-evaluated in three weeks, O'Brien adds.
"It's going to set him behind ... I don't think it's going to be major," Snitker said, according to 680 The Fan.
With Hamels sidelined for at least three weeks, Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos confirmed the pitcher won't be ready to start the regular season.
Hamels, 36, was acquired by the Braves on a one-year deal in December to provide their young rotation with a veteran presence.
He's started 421 games during a 14-year career, which includes 163 wins and four All-Star Game appearances.
Hamels spent the past season and a half with the Chicago Cubs, authoring a 3.30 ERA and 3.86 FIP in 218 innings.
