Angels' Heaney: I hope Astros 'feel like shit' for cheating

Los Angeles Angels pitcher Andrew Heaney sounded off on Houston Astros players for illegally stealing signs in 2017.

"Somebody in that locker room had to say, 'This is f----- up. We shouldn't be doing this,'" Heaney said Wednesday, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register. "For nobody to stand up and nobody to say 'We're cheating other players,' that sucks. That's a shitty feeling for everybody. I hope they feel like shit."

While the commissioner's report described the Astros' scheme as player-driven, Major League Baseball only suspended manager AJ Hinch and general manager Jeff Luhnow. The report named Carlos Beltran, who played for the Astros in 2017, but he wasn't punished by MLB. He did, however, mutually agree to step down as manager of the New York Mets after the report was released.

While former Houston players Dallas Keuchel, Charlie Morton, and Marwin Gonzalez have all apologized, Heaney said the Astros' response has been inadequate.

"They sure as shit need to do more than what they already did," Heaney said. "That was terrible. I understand they are going to get their shit in order and they are going to have their thing to say, and they are going to hide behind the commissioner's report and whatever, but I don't think that's good enough."

Heaney's teammate Max Stassi, who appeared in 14 games for the Astros in 2017, addressed the matter Wednesday.

"As a younger guy, I was called up in August 2017 and I saw what was going on. ... I apologize to all those around the game, the people who were affected by it, the fans, coaches," the catcher said, according to The Athletic's Fabian Ardaya. "Especially the kids who look up to us. We're supposed to set an example and do the right thing. We didn't do that."

Stassi said he wasn't aware of any cheating by the Astros in 2018 or 2019.

Astros players are reportedly meeting with team owner Jim Crane on Wednesday and plan to formulate a public response to the scandal. The team's first media availability is scheduled for Thursday.
