Tampa Bay Rays ace Blake Snell has changed his representation, leaving Apex Baseball and hiring Scott Boras as his agent, the former Cy Young winner confirmed to Ken Rosenthal and Josh Tolentino of The Athletic.

Snell, 27, is under contract through 2023 after signing a five-year, $50-million extension prior to the 2019 campaign. The deal buys out his arbitration seasons and one free-agency year.

The left-hander will be eligible for free agency for the first time in his career heading into his age-31 season. Snell owns a 3.24 ERA and 3.42 FIP over 506 innings through four MLB seasons, claiming the 2018 AL Cy Young award while making that year's All-Star roster and earning MVP consideration.

Snell has made headlines in recent weeks for his dominance in the MLB The Show Players League, as well as a controversial Twitch stream during which he blasted the league for wanting to cut player salaries through revenue-sharing should baseball resume amid the coronavirus pandemic.

"If I'm going to play, I should be getting money I signed to be getting paid," Snell said at the time. "I should not be getting half of what of I'm getting paid because the season is cut in half on top of a 33% cut of the half that's already there. So, I'm really getting, like, 25%. On top of that, it's getting taxed. So, imagine how much I'm actually making to play. ... And now I play risking my life."

Boras, the outspoken agent who now represents Snell, has also criticized MLB's revenue-sharing proposal and said the league is attempting to "privatize the gains and socialize the losses."

MLB and the MLBPA are expected to continue discussions this week regarding the parameters of a 2020 season, including an economic proposal and expanded health and safety regulations for players and team personnel.
