Alderson: Mets will only look for GM, Rojas to remain manager in 2021
New York Mets president Sandy Alderson announced Monday the team will not hire a president of baseball operations and will just focus on finding a general manager, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.
The 73-year-old executive also acknowledged he would be taking a more hands-on approach to roster decisions after rejoining the team in early November.
"I will probably be more involved on the baseball operations side than originally anticipated," Alderson said.
The Mets have been looking for a new GM since the club and Brodie Van Wagenen parted ways earlier this month.
New York has interviewed about six GM candidates, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. DiComo adds a second round will likely happen soon, which will involve new owner Steve Cohen.
The team didn't reach out to former Chicago Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein about any job openings, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
Meanwhile, Alderson did confirm Luis Rojas will remain as the Mets manager in 2021.
"I'm thrilled to be the manager under the leadership of Sandy and to try to win a World Series. We look forward to putting in the work and making our fans proud." Rojas said, according to Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News.
The team went 26-34 during the shortened 2020 campaign in Rojas' first season in Queens.
