The Chicago Cubs have agreed to a minor-league contract with former All-Star right-hander Shelby Miller, a source told Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.

If he makes the team out of spring training, Miller will earn a base salary of $875,000, according to Feinsand. The pact also contains performance bonuses worth up to $600,000. Completion of the deal is pending a physical.

The 30-year-old was at his best during his first four big-league seasons, during which he helped the St. Louis Cardinals to the 2013 NL pennant and became an All-Star with the Atlanta Braves two years later.

But his career went south after joining the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2016 when he was one of the worst pitchers in baseball. Miller underwent Tommy John surgery the following summer and has pitched in just 28 big-league contests over the last four years.

Miller joined the Milwaukee Brewers last winter on a minor-league deal but ultimately opted out of the pandemic-shortened season. His most recent appearance came in 2019 with the Texas Rangers, when he posted an 8.59 ERA with 30 strikeouts and 29 walks across 19 appearances (eight starts).

The right-hander owns a career 38-56 record with a 4.11 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, and 622 strikeouts over parts of eight major-league campaigns.
