Rays prospect in stable condition after being hit in head by liner in Triple-A

Tampa Bay Rays pitching prospect Tyler Zombro is in stable condition after being hit in the head with a line drive during a Triple-A contest Thursday in Durham, North Carolina.

In the eighth inning of the Durham Bulls' game against the Norfolk Tides at Durham Bulls Athletic Park, Tides catcher Brett Cumberland laced a comebacker that struck Zombro in the side of his head. He immediately collapsed to the ground face first and began convulsing, according to Chris Lea of WRAL-TV.

Zombro was stretchered off the field after being worked on by trainers and medical personnel. He was then put into an ambulance and taken directly to Duke University Hospital, the Rays said in a statement. Zombro is awake and responsive, a person close to the situation told TJ Eck of WHSV News.

"(Zombro) is currently undergoing further treatment and observation," the Rays said. "Additional updates will be provided as they become available. Our thoughts and prayers are with Tyler, his family, and his teammates."

The game was suspended following the incident, and later called off entirely. Norfolk led 12-4 at the time play was halted.

Zombro, 26, joined the Rays in 2017 after a four-year NCAA career at George Mason University. This is his first season pitching at Triple-A.
