Trevor Story appears ready to close the book on his time in Colorado.

The pending free-agent shortstop has no intention of re-signing with the Rockies this winter, sources told Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post.

Story became the last remaining star in Denver after the Rockies traded Nolan Arenado to the St. Louis Cardinals in the winter. Rumors of his possible departure picked up in earnest after the two-time All-Star expressed his displeasure about the Arenado trade. In March, it was reported that the Rockies didn't have the budget to extend him.

But Rockies interim general manager Bill Schmidt isn't prepared to say goodbye to Story just yet.

"Not necessarily," Schmidt told Saunders when asked if it's become clear that Story won't re-sign. "We'll see what happens. We are not at that point."

Story is off to a slow start in 2021, slashing .255/.322/.424 with five homers, and 23 RBIs over 205 plate appearances. He's also stolen eight bases. The 28-year-old is currently on the 10-day injured list with elbow inflammation.

Despite being a rental player, Story will likely be the most sought-after player at this year's trade deadline. However, Schmidt said he's had no substantial talks with other teams about Story to this point.

"There really hasn't been much," the GM said. "Some clubs have reached out and expressed (interest) if we get to that point. But there has not really been anything to talk about. ... There is nothing really to follow up on."
