Ump's 9th-inning strike call confuses everyone, leaves Yankees fuming
The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees went to extra innings Sunday night. How they got to the 10th inning left the Yankees - and much of social media - in anger.
With two out in the ninth inning of a tie game, home plate umpire Gabe Morales rung up Yankees pinch-hitter Rougned Odor to force a 10th inning. The pitch from Matt Barnes appeared to be well off the plate.
Odor dropped his bat and glared at Morales from home plate. Third base coach Phil Nevin screamed at Morales and was immediately ejected.
Morales' strike zone continued to confound when he called a questionable ball four to open the 10th. This led to a second Yankees coach, Carlos Mendoza, getting run from the game.
Shortly after that exchange, Xander Bogaerts broke the tie with a two-run single, giving Boston a 6-4 lead.
New York went on to lose the game 6-5, getting swept by their longtime rivals in the process.
