D-Backs' Smith suspended 10 games for foreign-substance violation

Major League Baseball suspended Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Caleb Smith 10 games and handed him an undisclosed fine after umpires found a foreign substance on his glove during an Aug. 18 contest, the league announced Tuesday.

Smith is appealing the suspension.

Smith was ejected from a game against the Philadelphia Phillies after umpires confiscated and turned his glove over to league officials following a substance check at the end of the eighth inning.

The 30-year-old southpaw is the second player to be suspended since MLB started enforcing rules prohibiting the use of foreign substances more aggressively earlier this season. Seattle Mariners reliever Hector Santiago was the first to receive the 10-game ban in late June.

Smith, who the Diamondbacks acquired from the Miami Marlins in 2020, is 4-8 with a 5.12 ERA and 1.42 WHIP across 33 games (13 starts) this season.
