Blue Jays sign Polanco to minor-league deal
The Toronto Blue Jays signed outfielder Gregory Polanco to a minor-league contract, they announced Tuesday, according to Keegan Matheson of MLB.com.
He'll report to Triple-A Buffalo, according to Sportsnet's Shi Davidi.
The Pittsburgh Pirates placed Polanco on outright waivers last week. After going unclaimed, he was designated for assignment and subsequently released over the weekend.
The 29-year-old was once a highly touted prospect in the Pirates organization but failed to live up to the hype in the majors. Over parts of eight seasons in Pittsburgh, Polanco owns a .718 OPS with 96 home runs and 362 RBIs while battling various injuries. This year, he hit .208/.283/.354 in 107 games before being released.
Polanco adds outfield depth for Toronto and another left-handed bat that could potentially be called up at some point in September.
