Report: Shildt expected to interview for Padres' manager job
The San Diego Padres are expected to interview former St. Louis Cardinals skipper Mike Shildt for their open manager position, sources told Dennis Lin and Britt Ghiroli of The Athletic.
The Cardinals fired Shildt last week because of "a philosophical difference." The 53-year-old was apparently surprised by the decision.
One significant discrepancy involved Shildt's resistance to the further implementation of analytics, which president John Mozeliak and the front office wanted to push forward, a source told Katie Woo of The Athletic.
"There is merit (to those factors)," Shildt said in a text to The Athletic. "But not the entire picture."
Shildt is expected to make a full public statement Monday, Woo notes.
After taking over for Mike Matheny midway through the 2018 season, Shildt helped lead the Cardinals to a 252-199 record and made three straight trips to the postseason. St. Louis won a club-record 17 straight games this summer to help propel it into the National League's second wild-card spot.
The Padres, meanwhile, recently fired Jayce Tingler after two seasons as manager. Under Tingler, San Diego went 116-106 since the start of 2020 but missed the 2021 postseason after opening the year with lofty expectations.
