The Houston Astros are returning to the World Series for the third time since 2017, and the specter of the sign-stealing scandal still looms, especially when it comes to fans on the road showering the players with jeers and taunts.

Astros owner Jim Crane is hopeful his club can finally escape that saga once and for all.

"We got it pinned on us, we owned it, we took the penalty, and we're past that now," Crane said, according to Gabe Lacques of USA Today.

However, it might not go away so easily. Oakland Athletics pitcher Chris Bassitt recently said that being caught illegally stealing signs should result in lifetime bans.

Houston fired former GM Jeff Luhnow and skipper AJ Hinch after MLB suspended both due to the sign-stealing scheme involving the use of technology during the 2017 and 2018 seasons. No Astros players were punished for their roles.

In eliminating the Boston Red Sox from the postseason, Crane feels his team has been vindicated and will be a force beyond 2021.

"This team is here to last and will perform well from here on out, and we hope to put more flags on that pole out there," he said.
