Pujols reflects on 1st career pitching appearance: 'A dream come true'

There isn't much left for St. Louis Cardinals legend Albert Pujols to accomplish in his career, but he tried his hand at something new Sunday - pitching.

The 42-year-old entered the game as a reliever in the top of the ninth inning with the Cardinals leading the San Francisco Giants 15-2. After recording two outs and putting a pair on base, Giants outfielder Luis Gonzalez (who also pitched in the game) gave Pujols a rude welcome to the mound by blasting a three-run dinger.

Pujols allowed another homer to Joey Bart before getting LaMonte Wade Jr. to ground out to end the game.

Although he now boasts a 36.00 career ERA, Pujols still gushed about the experience following the contest.

"That was a dream come true, and now I can say I did it, and it was fun," Pujols said, according to MLB.com's John Denton. "It wasn't fun giving up two bombs, but I think the fans had a good time, and I'm sure the guys who took me deep did, too."

He added: "They made me pay like I've been making pitchers pay for 22 years."

Pujols joins Hall of Famer Babe Ruth as the only players in MLB history to hit 600 career home runs and appear in a game as a pitcher, according to Jeff Jones of BellevilleNews.com.
