Melvin miffed by Padres' struggles: 'We're lacking a lot right now'

San Diego Padres manager Bob Melvin is growing frustrated with his club's inconsistent play.

The Arizona Diamondbacks blanked the Padres on Thursday night, giving San Diego its second straight defeat and sixth in the past 10 contests. Diamondbacks right-hander Drey Jameson tossed seven shutout innings in his MLB debut, leaving Melvin perplexed.

"(Jameson) goes in his Major League debut, he gets seven innings, two hits, you don't score - it looks bad," Melvin said, according to MLB.com's Jake Rill.

Melvin added: "Nothing against their guy - he pitched well. But we're lacking a lot right now."

The Padres are just 18-20 since making a handful of blockbuster acquisitions at the trade deadline. Notable pickups Juan Soto and Josh Hader have struggled, while the club also had to deal with an 80-game suspension for star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr.

Melvin believes the club needs to put together more of a consistent plan at the plate to get back on track.

"Very frustrating. It didn't even feel like we even put up a fight," Melvin said. "Can't play this way, especially this time of year."

Jameson's impressive debut outing marked the second time in less than two weeks that a young D-Backs pitcher stymied the Padres. Right-hander Ryne Nelson shut down San Diego for seven scoreless innings Sept. 5 in a 5-0 victory.
