Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Corbin Burnes is one year away from free agency, and it appears he's intent on testing the open market.

"I think a couple years ago, I was probably open to going and getting something done, but I think at this point, both sides know we're a year away from free agency and want to see what the market can bring," Burnes told "Foul Territory" on Friday.

Burnes said he and the Brewers haven't engaged in any discussions about a contract extension to keep the 2021 NL Cy Young winner in Milwaukee.

The 29-year-old enjoyed another strong season on the mound in 2023, posting a 10-8 record with a 3.39 ERA and 200 strikeouts across 193 2/3 innings.

Brewers general manager Matt Arnold said in October that he expects Burnes to be with the team to start the 2024 campaign.

"I would expect him to be a Brewer here next year," Arnold said.

Burnes said in February that a contentious arbitration hearing with the Brewers hurt his relationship with the team.

"There's no denying that the relationship is definitely hurt from what (transpired) over the last couple of weeks," Burnes said at the time.

The three-time All-Star blossomed into one of baseball's premier starting pitchers over the past few seasons. Burnes owns a 2.86 ERA and has racked up 11.1 K/9 over 622 1/3 innings since the beginning of the 2020 season.
