Orioles' Holliday to make MLB debut Wednesday

The Baltimore Orioles called up shortstop Jackson Holliday, baseball's top prospect, the team announced Wednesday.

The 20-year-old will make his debut Wednesday against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, batting ninth and playing second base.

He will wear the same No. 7 his dad, Matt Holliday, wore during his time in the major leagues.

Holliday was off to a torrid start at Triple-A Norfolk, slashing .333/.482/.595 with two home runs, five doubles, 18 runs scored, and nine RBIs across 42 at-bats.

The Orioles sent Holliday back to the minors even though he hit .311 with a pair of home runs and six RBIs over 15 spring training games.

Holliday was the first overall pick in the 2022 draft. He rocketed through the minor leagues, starting the 2023 campaign at Single-A before finishing the season with an 18-game stint in Triple-A.

The Orioles could receive an extra first-round pick by calling up Holliday within the first two weeks of the campaign. This is part of an incentive program that awards a team a first-rounder if a player accrues a full year of service time and wins Rookie of the Year.

Baltimore designated Tony Kemp for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.
