Mets' Alonso: 'A lot of games left' before trade deadline
First baseman Pete Alonso isn't buying into the idea of his struggling New York Mets becoming sellers this summer.
“We have at least two months. That’s a lot of time. That’s a lot of games left. It’s not like the trade deadline is 10 days away," he told The Athletic's Will Sammon before Sunday's 4-3 win over the Giants.
"I feel like there’s plenty of time for us to make up ground and then also really showcase who we are as a team and what our potential can be.”
The Mets' record stands at 22-30 after they lost 12 of their last 16 contests. The club sits a daunting 15 games back of the first-place Phillies in the NL East but only four games out of the final wild-card spot.
Alonso, who is set to become a free agent after the season, is a prime trade candidate should the Mets' struggles continue. The slugger is posting a 124 OPS+ with 12 home runs and 26 RBIs.
“The only thing I can control is my attitude and my play; I can’t really control those decisions," Alonso said.
He knows it will ultimately fall on him and his teammates to play better if they want to stick together beyond the trade deadline.
“The biggest way to solve it is to go out there and make it happen between the lines," Alonso said. "That’s really it. Yeah, we haven’t been playing well, but the only way to solve it is to win.”
The Mets begin a three-game series with the Dodgers on Monday.
