Report: Astros offered Bregman 6-year, $156M contract
The Houston Astros offered free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman a six-year contract worth around $156 million, a source told MLB.com's Brian McTaggart.
Bregman is looking for a deal that's worth closer to $200 million, McTaggart reports.
The $156 million would be an Astros franchise record; Jose Altuve's $151-million contract extension in 2018 is the largest commitment in team history. Astros owner Jim Crane hasn't signed a free agent to a term longer than five years since taking control of the club in 2011.
"He's got the right to do what he thinks is best for him and his family and that's also important," Astros manager Joe Espada said Tuesday of Bregman. "He knows that we support him, we love him here in Houston. He's helped us win some championships and a lot of baseball games. He's also a guy that has done a lot for this community and that means a lot to me and this organization. Hopefully we can get it done."
The Astros have discussed Jorge Polanco as an option at third base or instead improving at first base, with Christian Walker emerging as a potential target, McTaggart reports.
Bregman spent the first nine seasons of his career with the Astros. The 30-year-old won a pair of World Series titles, made two All-Star appearances, and posted a 132 OPS+ across 1,111 games.
Bregman slashed .260/.315/.453 with 26 home runs, 30 doubles, and 75 RBIs in 145 games in 2024.
