Watch: Colorado's Calvert sent off for returning to field without permission

Caleb Calvert thought his day against the Philadelphia Union was going to be special after he scored a beauty to mark his very first goal for the Colorado Rapids, but his dream day turned into a nightmare when he was ejected from the game in unorthodox fashion.

Calvert picked up a yellow card for time-wasting in the 69th minute and was told by referee Jose Carlos Rivero to head off the pitch to deal with an injury. But he remained on the field and did not get permission to return, which forced Rivero into issuing a second yellow card within 30 seconds.

Assistant coach Conor Casey was also given his marching orders for protesting the decision from the sidelines, and, for good measure, the Union then scored a go-ahead goal just a few minutes later:
