It had to be Megan Rapinoe.

One of the faces of women's football, the U.S. superstar captured both the Golden Ball and Golden Boot awards after Sunday's 2-0 victory over the Netherlands in the World Cup final. The 34-year-old, who made her presence felt on and off the pitch during the competition, lifted the Golden Ball trophy after being recognized as the best player this summer in France.

Despite finishing tied with compatriot Alex Morgan after tallying six goals and three assists, Rapinoe claimed Golden Boot honors by virtue of recording those totals while playing fewer minutes than her teammate.

She joins Carin Jennings (1991) and Carli Lloyd (2015) as the only American women to be named the top player at the World Cup. Rapinoe is also the first to win both individual trophies in the same tournament.

The decisive goal in the Golden Boot race also proved to be the tournament's most critical.

Rapinoe, who came into the final game nursing a hamstring injury, slotted home a calm penalty in the 61st minute on Sunday in Lyon. That proved to be the match- and World Cup-winning goal, as the U.S. defended the crown it captured four years ago in Canada, winning the nation's fourth title overall.

One of the most fervent voices in the battle for equality in football, Rapinoe has also long been outspoken on LGBTQ issues, as well as social and racial injustice in the United States.

She's made her opinions of U.S. President Donald Trump known, too. In an interview that emerged during this summer's tournament, Rapinoe reiterated her stance on the current White House administration, saying she wouldn't go to the "fucking White House" if the USWNT was invited.
