Playoff bracket set after wild MLS Decision Day

The Major League Soccer season ended with a bang, as questions over who will compete in the playoffs were answered during an action-packed Decision Day on Sunday.

Of the three teams competing for the final two playoff spots, the San Jose Earthquakes were the odd ones out by the time the final whistle blew on the 2019 regular season.

In a match where the winner was guaranteed a spot in the postseason, the Portland Timbers - last season's runners-up in the MLS Cup final - scored two second-half goals to end San Jose's season with a 3-1 victory.

FC Dallas left nothing to chance as they secured their place in the MLS playoffs with a decisive 6-0 win over Sporting KC.

2017 MLS champions Toronto FC benefitted from results outside of their 1-0 victory over the Columbus Crew to jump up to fourth place in the Eastern Conference.

TFC began the day in sixth place, but the Montreal Impact's 3-0 win over the New York Red Bulls, as well as D.C. United's goalless draw with FC Cincinnati, ensured that the Reds will begin the playoffs at home. Toronto will host Wayne Rooney's D.C. United in the opening round of the postseason at BMO Field.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles FC ended the season in style after Carlos Vela scored a hat-trick in their 3-1 victory over the Colorado Rapids to set the MLS single-season scoring record with 34 goals. LAFC also ended the 2019 campaign with a record-breaking 72 points.

The Black and Gold will have a first-round bye in the playoffs after a dominant campaign to finish atop the Western Conference, while New York City FC will also get a free pass to the second round after finishing six points above defending MLS champions Atlanta United in the Eastern Conference.
