Askren: I don't deserve rematch with Masvidal after record-setting KO

UFC welterweight Ben Askren suffered the first defeat of his MMA career in one of the most brutal ways possible Saturday at UFC 239, going down in just five seconds - a promotional record - thanks to a flying knee from rival Jorge Masvidal.

Askren spoke openly about the devastating loss Monday on "Ariel Helwani's MMA Show," revealing that he didn't have any memory of the fight and couldn't recall anything until he was at the hospital.

"I remember being in the cage with (Masvidal). I don't really remember the flying knee," Askren said. "And then when I can recall, I remember everything. I was like, 'Oh shit, I lost to Jorge Masvidal. This freakin' sucks.'"

If Askren had won, the former Bellator and ONE champion likely would've been in line for a title shot against 170-pound king Kamaru Usman.

Although the fight abruptly ended Askren's momentum from his debut UFC win against Robbie Lawler, he isn't looking to run it back with Masvidal.

"What am I gonna do about it? Cry? Ask for a rematch? I don't deserve a rematch," Askren said. "I got knocked out in five seconds."

Askren spent the run-up to the bout antagonizing Masvidal to the point where the UFC veteran said he'd never been more motivated to hurt an opponent.

While Askren said he still dislikes Masvidal, he gave credit to his fellow welterweight for the picture-perfect flying knee.

"I had an inkling that he was gonna try something right away," Askren said. "And I've kinda always thought, 'Who the hell gets flying kneed?' Can't you see that coming? It's coming from so far away. But when I watched the film - I mean, I don't like Jorge at all, but that was a damn good flying knee.

"He hit it fast and explosively, he got some serious airtime on it, and obviously connected on the right spot."

Askren was a perfect 19-0 prior to Saturday but will have to wait to avenge his first loss, as he's medically suspended until Sept. 5.
