Earnhardt Jr. hopes to be 'half as good' as Romo in new broadcast role

Dale Earnhardt Jr. will be heading to the broadcast booth once his NASCAR career comes to a close at the end of the 2017 season, and hopes to make as smooth a transition as former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has done with CBS.

During a press conference at Talladega Superspeedway on Friday, Earnhardt, who signed a multi-year deal with NBC, said he's been picking up pointers from watching Romo.

"If I'm half as good as (Romo) is, I'll be happy. That guy is just awesome," Earnhardt said, according to For The Win's Michelle R. Martinelli. "And he's doing such a great job. And he sounds like he's sitting right there next to you on the couch just talking about the game like a best friend. It's easy to listen to, and he does such a good job with it. He doesn't try to be anything he’s not. And hopefully if I can maintain that, and certainly, I'll get better with more reps, just like anything else."

Earnhardt's new role won't be limited to NASCAR coverage. His agreement with NBCUniversal will also allow him to pursue movies, television, podcasts, and other opportunities within the company's media businesses.
