The drama that spun out of Kevin Durant's decamping the Oklahoma City Thunder for the Golden State Warriors in 2016 has been well-chronicled, but the newly minted NBA champion has shed more light on how challenging he found the transition.

"To have so many people just say, 'Fuck you,' that really does it to you," Durant told San Francisco Magazine's Jon Steinberg, reflecting on the visceral reaction from fans in the days after he announced he'd join the Warriors in July 2016.

"Because I truly had invested everything I had into the people I played for ... and for those people that I know and love and trust to turn their back on me after I was fully invested in them, it was just ... more than I could take."

Last spring, Durant said he understood the reactions of some Oklahoma City fans, but now admits that the wave of anger hurt, and hit him particularly hard a week later while he was on a Nike trip to China.

"That was before I met anybody from the Warriors and dove into the culture. I was basically on my own," Durant said. "It was like you were in between two teams. I'm telling you, I was fucked up for a while!"

Durant's agent, Rich Kleiman, said his client called him in his hotel room, distraught.

"He calls me and says, 'Yo, are you up?' And I'm like, 'Yeah, what's up?'" Kleiman said. "And he's like, 'Why the fuck did you let me do this to my life?' And I'm like, 'Ohh shit, I'm coming over to your room.'"

Said Durant: "That hotel was rock bottom."
