Philadelphia 76ers general manager Bryan Colangelo says a contract extension with center Joel Embiid could be sealed by Oct. 16.

"It is certainly something that is being considered and discussed," Colangelo said Wednesday, according to Calkins Media's Tom Moore. "I'm cautiously optimistic."

Oct. 16 marks the deadline for players hitting restricted free agency next summer to sign an extension. While Sixers owner Josh Harris has spoken of wanting to lock the 23-year-old big man up, there's still some risk involved.

Embiid has played a grand total of 31 NBA games out of a possible 246 since being drafted in 2014. The fact the Sixers view extending him as a no-brainer despite him fighting through serious foot and knee injuries is a testament to the center's generational talent.
