Pair of 3-point records fall in Wednesday night's scoring deluge

A decade ago, the New York Knicks led the league by taking an average of 27.9 3-pointers per game, an all-time watermark for long-range attempts at the time. Today, that rate would rank as the sixth-lowest 3-point output in the NBA.

Need more proof that times have changed? Two NBA records related to 3-point shooting volume fell Wednesday night.

First, the Houston Rockets blew past the single-game record for 3-point attempts, launching 70 in their 145-142 overtime loss to the Brooklyn Nets. The previous mark for long-range attempts from a team in a single game was 61.

James Harden led the way with 19 3-point shots, connecting on five en route to a season-high 58 points. Gerald Green added 15 attempts, accounting for all of his shots from the field. Austin Rivers, Eric Gordon, James Nunnally, P.J. Tucker, and Gary Clark each added at least five 3-point attempts.

In the process, the Rockets also set the record for most 3-point attempts in a half:

Later in the evening, the Golden State Warriors and New Orleans Pelicans combined to make 43 threes, also an NBA record. The two teams connected on 50 percent of their 86 combined attempts.

The Warriors shot 24-of-49 from beyond the arc, led by 9-of-17 3-point shooting from Stephen Curry. The Pelicans shot 19-of-37 on threes, with Nikola Mirotic setting the tone with 6-of-10 3-point shooting from the bench.

Despite scoring at least 140 points and etching their names in the annals of NBA history, both the Rockets and Pelicans fell in their respective matchups. Welcome to the modern NBA.
