Adam Silver's commitment to making the NBA a global juggernaut will continue south of the American border.

The first G League affiliate to operate outside of the United States and Canada will be in Mexico City, Silver announced on Thursday.

Mexican professional club Capitanes, a team based in the capital, will join the G League in the 2020-21 season.

Silver made the announcement ahead of the NBA's annual slate of games in Mexico City, which includes the Detroit Pistons versus the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday and the Phoenix Suns versus the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday. These contests will mark the 29th and 30th games the league has played in Mexico, the most in any country outside of the United States and Canada.

The G League agreement with Capitanes is for five years but the team will not have an NBA affiliate.

Capitanes will become the 29th G League franchise upon its addition.
