Kings hire Monte McNair as new GM

The Sacramento Kings hired Monte McNair as their new general manager, the team announced.

The analytically minded McNair started with the Houston Rockets as a developer and programmer in 2007 before being promoted to director of basketball operations in 2013 and vice president of basketball operations in 2015. He then served under Rockets general manager Daryl Morey in his most recent role starting in 2018.

McNair played wide receiver at Princeton, where he graduated with a degree in computer science in 2006.

Former franchise star Vlade Divac ran the Kings from 2015 until this summer. Since Divac's surprise resignation last month, Joe Dumars, a Hall of Fame player and former Detroit Pistons executive, served as interim general manager. Dumars has now been named the Kings' chief strategy officer.

The team went 31-41 (.431) in the 2019-20 season, which was shortened due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The latest campaign was the Kings' 14th straight with a losing record, a span coinciding with the NBA's longest active postseason drought.
