The Dallas Mavericks appear to be looking into adding a veteran ballhandler to their backcourt rotation with the team working out Isaiah Thomas, Lance Stephenson, and Monta Ellis on Thursday, sources told The Athletic's Shams Charania and Jon Krawczynski.

Of the trio, Thomas, 32, appeared in the NBA most recently, logging a three-game stint with the New Orleans Pelicans last campaign.

Thomas was a two-time All-Star in his two-and-a-half seasons with the Boston Celtics from 2015-17 before a hip injury derailed his career. Playing a larger role with the Washington Wizards in 2019-20, the Lilliputian point man averaged 12.2 points and 3.7 assists across 40 appearances before being cut midseason after a trade to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Stephenson, 30, last played for the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018-19, averaging 7.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game, largely off the bench. At 6-foot-6, he projects as more of a wing than a true point guard, although he averaged 4.6 assists per game in 2013-14 with the Indiana Pacers.

Ellis, who averaged 17.8 points and 4.6 assists per game over 12 seasons, hasn't played in the NBA since 2016-17. The 6-foot-3 shooting guard turns 36 in October.

As currently constructed, the Mavericks' depth behind superstar point forward Luka Doncic includes Jalen Brunson, Trey Burke, and Tyrell Terry.
