P.J. Washington: Mavs players tired of 'Fire Nico' chants
Dallas Mavericks fans have continued to make their disdain for the Luka Doncic trade known nearly two months after the blockbuster.
"Fire Nico" chants have remained a constant at Mavs games since the deal and have spread across the city, including at an SMU basketball game, a Dallas Stars contest, an FC Dallas match, and most surprisingly, at Medieval Times.
While president and general manager Nico Harrison will continue to face scrutiny, Mavericks players just want to move on.
"At the end of the day, the trade has happened," forward P.J. Washington told The Athletic's Christian Clark after the team's 130-125 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday. "We understand we have a new team now. All that 'Fire Nico' stuff, we're sick and tired of hearing it."
He added, "We just want to go out there and play, and we need the fans to support us, no matter who's on the floor. That's just how I feel about it."
Former Mavs player Quentin Grimes, who was shipped to the 76ers for Caleb Martin at the deadline, recorded 28 points and six assists in Sunday's contest.
Dallas has been decimated by injuries recently. Dante Exum recently broke a bone in his hand and is unlikely to return this campaign. Kyrie Irving won't be available until next season at the earliest due to a torn ACL. Big men Dereck Lively II and Anthony Davis don't have timetables for their returns after suffering lower-body injuries in January and February, respectively.
The Mavericks are now 33-36, including a 1-8 record in March. They'll take on the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday.
