Report: Hawks, Young working toward trade
Trae Young's tenure with the Atlanta Hawks is coming to an end as the two sides are collaborating on trade talks, ESPN's Shams Charania reports.
Young, who has spent more than seven seasons with the Hawks, is reportedly looking for a destination that would employ him as a lead guard and is willing to offer him a contract extension, Charania adds.
The four-time All-Star is on an expiring contract that has a $48.9-million player option for the 2026-27 season.
The Hawks and Young failed to reach an extension agreement before the start of this season, and Atlanta has pivoted to its young core. Shooting guards Dyson Daniels and Nickeil Alexander-Walker are both averaging more minutes than Young, who has been held to 10 games this season due to injuries, including an MCL sprain.
However, Young has remained effective when on the floor, averaging 19.3 points and 8.9 assists while shooting 41.5% from the field.
The 27-year-old last appeared against the Knicks on Dec. 27, playing 31 minutes in the loss. He has since missed five games because of a quad injury.
The Hawks sit in 10th place in the Eastern Conference with a 17-21 record this season. They've lost nine of their last 11 contests.
Originally drafted fifth overall by the Dallas Mavericks, Young was acquired by Atlanta in a swap for Luka Doncic. Over eight years with the Hawks, Young has averaged 25.2 points and 9.8 assists while shooting 35.1% from deep.
