Memphis adds 4-star prospect Ellis to stacked recruiting class

Memphis keeps on adding to its stacked 2019 recruiting class.

Four-star guard Rejean "Boogie" Ellis announced his commitment to the Tigers on social media Monday.

"I'm going to Memphis," Ellis told 247Sports' Evan Daniels. "Just the opportunity to learn from Penny at the point guard spot and be able to show me firsthand on how to be a point guard and the opportunity to come and play right away with some great pieces ... Also, I have a great relationship with (assistant coach) Mike Miller and that really helped me in my decision.

"I just feel like I'm at home. I felt like it was very (family) oriented."

Ellis originally committed to playing for Duke in November before being granted a release from his letter of intent with the Blue Devils on May 2. The 18-year-old wanted to be Duke's starting point guard but knew that was a slim possibility with Tre Jones returning to school.

"I'm just looking for the best opportunity to play the point guard," Ellis told Rivals.com regarding his decommitment. "Everybody in the country knows I can score the ball, it's about if I can run a team and get people open.

"Me and my family thought it was best that I reopen my recruitment so that I could go to the best place that was gonna allow me to do that."

Ellis was selected to play in the prestigious Jordan Brand Classic in April.

The point guard prospect joins an outstanding recruiting class assembled by head coach Penny Hardaway, who posted a 22-14 record with the Tigers during his rookie year this past season, including an 11-7 mark in conference play.

Memphis has also received commitments from top-ranked recruit James Wiseman, five-star small forward D.J. Jeffries, and fellow ESPN Top 100 prospects Lester Quinones and Malcolm Dandridge.

The Tigers might not be finished, however, as they remain in the running for highly-touted guard RJ Hampton and five-star forwards Precious Achiuwa and Trendon Watford.
