Potential No. 1 pick Jack Leiter throws no-hitter for Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt right-hander Jack Leiter threw a no-hitter against South Carolina on Saturday, dominating the opposition with 16 strikeouts while allowing one walk en route to a 5-0 win.

The walk came against the leadoff man, and Leiter proceeded to retire the next 27 hitters he faced.

Leiter will be eligible for this summer's MLB draft and is considered a likely candidate to go first overall to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Jack is the 20-year-old son of Al Leiter, who played 19 MLB seasons split between the New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, and the then-Florida Marlins.

Leiter's Vanderbilt teammate and fellow right-hander Kumar Rocker is also an option to go first overall in this year's selection. Rocker threw a 19-strikeout no-hitter against Duke in 2019.

The 2021 MLB Draft is scheduled to begin July 11. The Texas Rangers, Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, and Baltimore Orioles are set to join Pittsburgh as teams with top-five picks.
