Virginia Tech head coach Justin Fuente announced Monday that the team has dismissed defensive back Mook Reynolds for a violation of athletic department policies.
Reynolds was suspended from the team and banned from football-related activities during the spring semester, although no specific reason was given for that decision.
Of the players returning for the 2018 season, Reynolds was the team's second-leading tackler in 2017. His dismissal is the latest in a series of off-the-field incidents for Virginia Tech in the offseason.
Cornerback Adonis Alexander was kicked off the team last month and co-defensive coordinator Galen Scott resigned in April after an extra-marital affair was brought to light.
