Ohio State head coach Ryan Day has named Justin Fields the team's starting quarterback to open the 2019 season.

"Justin kind of separated himself this week," Day said Monday, according to Kevin Allen of USA Today.

However, the coach would only commit to Fields starting in the season opener against Florida Atlantic on Aug. 31.

"Where it goes from there, we will see," Day added.

Fields, the top recruit in the 2018 class, saw limited action for Georgia last year while backing up Jake Fromm, completing 27 of 39 passes for 328 yards and four touchdowns.

He then transferred to Ohio State, where he's been competing with graduate transfer Gunnar Hoak to succeed Washington Redskins first-rounder Dwayne Haskins as the starting pivot.
