Tennessee offensive lineman Trey Smith was cleared to play in Saturday's season opener against Georgia State, according to The Athletic's David Ubben.

Smith started the first seven games of the 2018 season before being sidelined in October after physicians discovered blood clots in his lungs.

"My family and I consulted with several of the best doctors in the country, and a plan has been developed that allows me to compete with my teammates on game day," Smith said in a statement. "My family and I are confident in that plan. The coaches and staff here at Tennessee have always had my best interests at heart and I can't thank them enough. Thanks to all of the fans and my teammates for all of their support."

Smith is a former five-star prospect and the No. 1 overall ranked prospect on ESPN's 300 from the 2017 class.

Head coach Jeremy Pruitt did not disclose how many snaps Smith will play.
