Texas' Thompson to start vs. Rice

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian is naming Casey Thompson the starting quarterback against Rice on Saturday, according to On3 Sports' Joe Cook.

Sarkisian added that Hudson Card will play Saturday.

Card started the Longhorns' first two games of the season. However, the signal-caller completed just 8 of 15 passes for 61 yards in a 40-21 blowout loss versus Arkansas last week.

"I think Hudson's demeanor was fine," Sarkisian said Monday. "He just got antsy in the pocket."

Both Card and Thompson have played during Texas' first two contests. Card has racked up 285 passing yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions this season. Thompson, meanwhile, has completed 9 of 13 passes for 98 yards and a score while adding 44 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

Despite suffering the first defeat of his Texas tenure, Sarkisian is optimistic that the team will bounce back.

"The natural knee-jerk reaction is the sky is falling and we've got to change everything," Sarkisian said. "We've got a system and we've got coaches who have stood the test of time. We'll rely on that, and the players will continue to buy into that."
